WHY IS BISHOP MAHIAINI SCHOOLS A PERSONAL CHOICE

‘A MAN WITHOUT EDUCATION IS LIKE A BUILDING WITHOUT FOUNDATION” Anonymous

“A CHILD WITHOUT EDUCATION IS LIKE A BIRD WITHOUT WINGS”  Tibetan proverb.

Many parents/guardians understand importance of education, they invest in their child’s education immensely. They therefore put pressure in their children  to achieve good grades, & excel, at times their expectations are too high or not met by the student. Both parents & student get stressed & may create bad blood between them.  Its the role of the school to foster an environment of understanding, where a teacher plays a role of advocacy to the student. The teacher should identify the needs of the child , & how he/she will then take proactive steps together with the parent, to give  the student  maximum  support. Parents should not only value grades but should also encourage traits like, empathy, compassion, social skills, kindness among others.

In BMS we understand parents expectations & students needs to excel. We create a conducive environment, whereby parent & the student forge forward together, to achieve a common goal of excellence in grades, improving their talents, life skills, learning skills in extra & co curriculum activities & guiding them spiritually & socially . We have done a lot of researches, strategies, studies, that gives us authority to meet parents & students expectations.

The following are methodologies we have  employed, that mould a holistic student who is ready to embrace opportunities available to them, be a leader, critical thinkers, innovators & have ability to solve challenges, & problems in their lives.

Our primary goal is to have an inclusive education system that provide all students (high or low grade achievers) with the most and appropriate learning environment and opportunities for them to best achieve their full potential, we engage effective teaching and appropriate resources.

I CLASSROOM TEACHING METHODOLOGY

Classroom is an environment where students from different backgrounds with varying abilities, challenges  personalities, are brought together. It is the role of a responsible teacher to be creative, critical thinker, in order to meet students individual needs. Our teachers understand students have different  abilities & challenges, they therefore design teaching strategies & approaches, that will inspire & motivate students in classroom setting. They engage students through:    – Active Listening, this is essential to students who have no sense of expression. –  Constructive feedback, where a teacher praise, acknowledge, encourage the student’s effort in following directions given, good behavior, joy to ask questions, completion of home work effectively, love of learning & many more. Other students will feel empowered to follow the lead of student just praised.  – Peer Teaching,  Students feel free & trust fellow students, they can encourage each other effectively, teach one another in areas they excel, can ask question freely.  –  Analyses of topics students do not understand & focusing on them, – Group discussions, this paves way for demotivated ,quiet students, participate effectively. – virtual teaching , where teachers use videos, internet, practical teaching, use of diagrams, pictures, for students who find theoretical teaching a challenge. – Projects that inspire students to think critically to find solutions, this enhances independency. – Trained teachers with passion of teaching. Such a teacher employs all possible methods, is friendly compassionate, approachable, allows student assess them, is concerned about the grades & innovates ways to improving them  believes  in school Motto :ALL STUDENTS CAN . III,. GUIDANCE COUNSELING AND ADVOCACY

A study has been done that many parents/guardians reaction to bad grades was “PUNITIVE,” such strategies are likely to work if underlying problems in a child have been addressed, otherwise punitive parenting may inadvertently deny the child opportunity to learn the very skill, and knowledge they require to improve their grades. A teacher should be middle person between parent and student. Should be trusted as a child advocate.

Guidance and counseling is a professional assistance and guidance in solving personal or psychological problems. It is ways of helping a person see things more clearly possibly from a different view point. It is about listening to a child and giving friendly responsive suggestions. Bishop Mahiaini School regularly conduct guidance and counseling sessions and play a role of a student advocate by engaging the student and their parents in a positive learning focused classroom community.

III. COVERING BACKLOG

A motivated student with self-esteem, confidence and disciplined is ready for learning and has ability to achieve high grades. These  are some of the benefits of guidance and counseling.

Backlog is subjects/topics which have not been taught or understood by the student in the term, or in years, yet the student is allowed to proceed to the next class/classes. This becomes a buildup of unfinished, untaught topics/work which results in achievement of low grades by the student. These build up work needs to be taught & completed. STRESSORS ARE THE MAJOR CAUSES OF BACKLOG,(untaught, unfinished work) that leads to poor performance while BACK LOG IS THE MAIN COURSE OF POOR PERFORMANCE. Bishop Mahiaini School education system addresses these problems- by engaging these students into personal tuition, & employing above methodologies that are child centered. The students gets teachers full attention, while building rapport & guidance & counselling.

Tuition  is held outside of school hours, either during weekends, after classes, in the evenings etc, students performance is assessed through continuous assessment tests, exams speed tests etc. By the end of the term, the student will have cleared out of this predicament and will  achieve high grades. The school Motto “Every STUDENT CAN” becomes a reality.
